I did this once. Compare Charles Miller's recovery story to my Windows rant from the other day.

Here we have two serious problems totally out of the blue — a hardware failure on a Windows machine, and accidental data loss on a Linux system. In these unexpected circumstances, it's easier to fix up your own embarrassing catastrophic mistakes on a Linux computer than it is to make a trivial configuration change on Windows.
