Christopher Smith notes the launch of OLPC's "Give one, get one" program:

Here's a short summary: somehow, despite the near universal belief about free markets and cut throat competition in the tech market producing real innovation, the most innovative laptop and software platform that I've seen since the original PowerBook is a laptop designed in a two year time period by a bunch of altruists for use by kids in poor countries with effectively negative discretionary spending power. It's so cool, that, provided it suits your needs, it is a bargain at twice the price.

OLPC is an incredibly ambitious project; as a former OS/2 user, I'm a fan of tilting at windmills, and I think could probably overcome my distaste for typical laptops enough to buy one. But of course, they're not shipping to Australia.
