Mark Pilgrim explains his adorably controversial post about installing MySQL on Ubuntu:
Long answer: Comprehensive dependency tracking and automatic package updating is a Tier 1 feature, the single biggest user-facing advantage of Linux distributions over similarly targeted proprietary operating systems. Software freedom is the Tier 0 feature that enables this to work as well as it does. (If you want to see how well the system works without software freedom, check out the 64-bit Windows forums where people complain endlessly about driver incompatibilities.)
