Worst code ever?

I was reminded by a message on Twitter just now of a blog post I saw recently in which Steve Vinoski claims:

On the dynamic language front, the worst code I have seen in my career has always, always, always been in compiled imperative languages, most often Java and C++.

My initial reaction then was: "The lucky bastard has never had to work with PHP", and this is exactly what I'm talking about:

I defy anyone to look at the function img_assist_render_image() in drupal's img_assist module and retain any semblance of sanity.
